Case Study:
Jess Morgan, Paediatrician, passionate advocate and speaker around the mental health of healthcare professionals.
“I was a paediatrician when I developed burnout and mental illness, a very isolating experience. Restricted by the confines of a rigid medical training scheme, full of shame and with an overwhelming sense of failure, I left the profession. During this time, I became aware of Doctors in Distress and accessed one of their creative support programmes. By connecting with other health professionals, I was able to appreciate that I was not alone in experiencing the emotional burden of care-giving. Instead, it became apparent that this was simply something that we did not talk about. It also empowered me to unleash my creative side, something I have always loved but felt did not align with the science of medicine.
Since then, Doctors in Distress has helped me find my voice. The charity has offered me a platform to share my story to challenge the stigma and culture around wellbeing and suicide in health professionals. Not only has this had a positive impact on my own mental health but it has also contributed to high level systems and culture change. I now work in the wellbeing space and continue to advocate for change. The support and encouragement from the
charity has been invaluable in getting me to where I am now.”
