Campaigns
At Doctors in Distress, we run and are involved in a range of campaigns, fundraisers and events to help provide our life-changing services. Here are the current campaigns we are supporting.
National Suicide Memorial Day for Health and Care Workers
On the 17th September, Doctors in Distress along with NHS Practitioner Health, held the first ever National Suicide Memorial Day for Health and Care Workers.
According to the Office for National Statistics, 2500 healthcare workers have died by suicide since 2011. That’s 4 healthcare workers every week. These people were loved family members, friends and colleagues who made the tragic decision to take their own life.
This memorial day will be an annual event, on 17th September each year, to honour healthcare staff’s lives and remember them.
National Memorial Tree Campaign
Statistics show that in the UK one doctor takes their own life every 3 weeks and one nurse takes their own life every week.
These shocking figures are a stark reminder that the wellbeing of our healthcare workers is paramount.
Doctors in Distress and our patron, BAFTA winner and former NHS doctor Adam Kay, have launched a National Memorial Tree Campaign to remember those who have taken their own lives.

Stamp Out Sexism
Latest statistics show that two thirds of women working in surgery have reported being the target of sexual harassment and almost 30 per cent have been sexually assaulted (British Journal of Surgery, 2023).

Other studies show that 91 per cent of women doctors have experienced sexism and 60 per cent of nurses experienced sexual harassment. (BMA’s Sexism in Medicine, 2021)
There has also been a rise in the number of allegations and investigations of sexual assault and harassment in medical schools.
Experiencing sexual misconduct can have a profound effect on the mental health of healthcare workers.
We signed the BMA’s Ending Sexism in Medicine Pledge and continue to work with organisations to help end sexism in medicine.
